Reuse, Recycling, and Disposal Services

  • Bring your reusable furniture and mattresses to the SW parking lot of Clark Kerr May 18-28th for Cooperative Reuse! Sign up here to request a free furniture pickup (please note there is limited availability and this service cannot be guaranteed).

  • Berkeley residents can drop off up to 2 mattresses / box springs / futons for free at the Transfer Station.

  • Cooperative Reuse is accepting e-waste. Additionally, the Ewaste Collective is accepting electronic waste drop-offs for free, and the Transfer Station is accepting up to 2 free electronics.

  • The City of Berkeley is allowing 2 extra bags of trash; and you can work with your property owner to call 311 to order extra recycling and trash service. The City will not be offering free bulky item pick-up.

  • Extra trash can be brought directly to the Transfer Station for a fee.

  • See the Ecology Center’s tips for keeping curbside recycling safe and their sorting guide.

  • Donate your food to Cooperative Reuse or the Alameda County Food Bank.

  • For more donation opportunities, view StopWaste’s RE:Source Guide or the City of Berkeley's Reuse Guide.

  • Waterside Workshops: Donate your bikes to a great education and training program where youth learn how to fix their bicycles and get job training.

  • Uhuru Furniture: Picks up furniture and collectible donations in a one-hour time slot. Supports African community self-determination. Email pics of potential donations to oakland@uhurufurniture.org.

  • Drug/medication disposal: UHS has a drug disposal bin, open to students and the community for unwanted to expired residential pharmaceuticals.

Moving & Storage resources — go in with roommates to share costs!*

  • Use a car share (such as Gig) or rent a pick up truck to move items to your new home, the Transfer Station or a recycling location. Home Depot, U-Haul and other moving companies have small trucks.

    • Many car or truck rental companies have heightened cleaning protocols in place

  • Hire a moving company to pack, move, store and/or ship your belongings

  • Rent a storage unit or pod. Here is a list of nearby storage units and their costs.

*We know not everyone has the resources to hire assistance, and we are aware that the gig economy is unfair to many workers, but our greatest concern during this Move Out is the safety of the Berkeley community, including our unhoused neighbors, sanitation and other frontline workers, and our fellow students.
